SuttaCentral, in conjunction with the Buddhist orders of Amarapura–Rāmañña and Siam Nikāyas, launched the printing of English translations of the Suttas and Vinaya with their distribution through monastic education centers (Pirivena) of Sri Lanka.
A pirivena (plural: piriven) is a monastic college that educates the monks in Sri Lanka. In ancient times, they were also centers of secondary and higher education for lay people. (wikipedia)
There are 753 government approved Piriven in Sri Lanka where over 6000 teachers and nearly 60,000 monk students are engaged in teaching and learning. (Sati Pasala)
The goal of the project was to ensure that all monastics in Sri Lanka have ready access to modern, accurate, and readable translations of the most important works of the Tipiṭaka (Buddhist scripture).
Leaders of the Sri Lankan Nikāyas have agreed to support this project after detailed discussions. Before agreeing, they extensively reviewed SuttaCentral’s translations to assure their accuracy and suitability.
The 28 book sets of the Sutta and Vinaya printed in 2024 are the translations by Venerables Sujato and Brahmali.
Each set consists of:
- Vinayapiṭaka — 6 volumes
- Dīghanikāya — 3 volumes
- Majjhimanikāya — 3 volumes
- Saṁyuttanikāya — 5 volumes
- Aṅguttaranikāya — 5 volumes
- Khuddakanikāya — Dhammapada, Udāna, Itivuttaka, Suttanipāta, Theragāthā, Therīgāthā; 1 volume each
The books are printed in excellent quality hard cover with sewn bindings. The printing was be handled by the premier Lake House printers of Sri Lanka.
